The Herring Gull
is one of the best known birds of harbour and shore . Its screams
greet alike the trawlers bringing fish to a northern port and the tourists
on a southern
pier. It is ever ready to snatch a fish from a net or catch a piece
of bun thrown
by a friend. The adult is a handsome creature in its snowy white plumage
with
grey mantle, black-tipped wings, pale pink legs and feet, and yellow
bill splashed
with scarlet, while its red-rimmed lemon eyes are sharp indeed.
