48. Radio Telescopes

48. Radio Telescopes

Radio Telescopes for study of the heavenly bodies have been in use for some time, and a giant one is being erected in Cheshire to transmit and receive ultrashort-waves. These waves are picked up by a large curved wire mesh in a framework, shaped like a bowl fire, which can be pointed anywhere; they are then focused on to an aerial. Disturbances on the sun (sun-spots etc.) emit short radio waves. These affect ordinary radio transmissions by disturbing the upper atmosphere but such interferences may be obviated through discoveries made by Radio Telescopes.
