A woodland bird, a haunter of dead trees on which it finds grubs and larvae, its chief food. Its strong feet enable it to run about the tree, up or down, or upside down, a woodland acrobat. As its name implies it is also fond of nuts; these it places in a crevice in the bark, then hammers away at the shells until it is able to extract and eat the kernels.
The nest is made in a hole in a tree, and if the entrance is too large it blocks it up with mud to the required size. |
