The bank vole or red mouse is a dapper little animal. It is clad in red-brown above and white beneath. It is a common inhabitant of the hedgebank and thicket in most parts of the British Isles. Allied but slightly different forms occur on certain Hebridean islands and on Skomer Island off the Welsh Coast. The Skomer vole is somewhat bigger and a brighter brown in colour than the common bank vole, however all the bank voles are very smart, indeed they are most attractive wee beasts. |
