The Edible Frog
(Rana esculenta)
This is the frog well known on the Continent for its edible qualities. Whether it is a native of Britain is doubtful though it occurs in various places in south eastern England, where it has probably been introduced. The male has a very loud strong voice. The globular sacs one on each side of the head are noticeable. The common frog does not possess such sacs. The edible frog is a much more aquatic species than the common frog and does not wander far from the water in which it dives and swims with such skill. |
