Set B5 - British Wild Life - card information

4. The Red Deer
(Cervus elaphus)

4. The Red Deer

The red deer is the largest and finest of the land mammals that live wild in Britain. Formerly widespread, wild herds today are limited to Devon and Somerset, the Lake District and the Highlands of Scotland. They are mostly found in the Highland deer forests. A deer forest is a treeless area of country where deer are allowed to go their own way. The male red deer has antlers and is called a stag. The female is called a hind. The calves are usually born in June, and are at first prettily spotted. Normally a hind has only one calf at a time.
