As its name implies this Helleborine grows in damp places particularly where the soil contains lime. It likes the damp hollows in sand dunes and the specimen depicted grew in such a place. It was fifteen inches high, but taller plants are often found. It blooms in July. It is an Orchid, and the flower stalk springs from a long-creeping root stock or rhizome. Though nowhere common it is widely distributed throughout Britain. |
