Set B6 - Wild Flowers Series 2 - card information

15. Marsh Helleborine
(Epipactis palustris L.)

15. Marsh Helleborine

As its name implies this Helleborine grows in damp places particularly where the soil contains lime. It likes the damp hollows in sand dunes and the specimen depicted grew in such a place. It was fifteen inches high, but taller plants are often found. It blooms in July. It is an Orchid, and the flower stalk springs from a long-creeping root stock or rhizome. Though nowhere common it is widely distributed throughout Britain.
