Set B6 - Wild Flowers Series 2 - card information

22. Butterwort (Pinguicula vulgaris L.)

22. Butterwort

Like the Sundew the Butterwort grows in boggy and damp places and it too is insectivorous. The fleshy leaves are sticky and, when small insects adhere to them, the edges of the leaves curl inwards and the leaf-juice eventually absorbs the insects. The bluish-purple flowers are borne singly on slender stems, three to six inches high, which spring from the centre of the rosette of leaves. It flowers from May to July.
