3. Butterbur

A plant of the damp places and river banks. The flowers appear early and before the leaves, and the club-shaped flower heads are either male or female. They are rich in honey, and the bees love to visit them. The leaves, when they are fully grown, are huge and resemble giant rhubarb leaves. They can attain a diameter of three feet and are borne on strong hollow stalks. Its flowering period is March to May.
