Set B6 - Wild Flowers Series 2 - card information

9. Early Purple Orchis
(Orchis mascula L.)

9. Early Purple Orchis

This is the commonest and one of the earliest of the many species of British Orchids. It blooms from April to June and may be found in pastures and meadows, downland and sand dunes, and in woods which are not too dark. In colour and size it is very variable, and can range from deep purple-red to almost white, and from six inches to eighteen in height. Usually its leaves are spotted, but not invariably so.
